The KHS Allotment was started by the 'Friends of Kettlethorpe', great thanks to Monica Graham, in early 2009. They landscaped the area, fenced it off and provided a container to hold the garden equipment.
The whole site was then officially handed over to Kettlethorpe High School for use by the pupils at a ceremony in September 2009.
Since then a group of Y10 pupils have worked at the Allotment every Tuesday Period 1, with Mr Minford.
On Wednesdays the Garden Club is run by Miss Thompson from 3.05 to 4.30, all are welcome whatever age.
During the winter weeding and preparation of the pond area was carried out which was difficult with no water supply (lots of buckets of water involved). The Orchard area was planted with fruit trees and fruit bushes . A pyracantha hedge was planted to protect and enclose the perimiter fence. Seeds were sown and grown in the school greenhouse. We eventually secured a water supply in the Spring of 2010.
When Spring arrived the Allotment kicked into action and all kinds of things were planted.
In May a major project began to plant a 'Maize Maze' based on the idea that is so successful in York. Mr Ash marked out the site based on a plan provided by Miss Goodwin. 6000 seeds were planted by Mr Minford and the Y10s along with Mr Pickles and Mr Morley along with Miss Thompson, Miss Ashe and the Garden Club.
At this stage we must mention and thank Albert who regularly helps us at the Allotment doing all sorts of jobs as well as offering his invaluable experience.
In recent weeks the produce has started to grow and radishes and lettuce have been sold in the staffroom to provide funds for the Allotment. Soon we will have strawberries, tomatoes, apples, potatoes and maybe even peppers, aubergines, melons and cucumbers.
Keep watching this site for updates.
