Industry
In this unit you will investigate industrial location and activity.
- You will find out how locational factors, such as transport, availability of raw materials, finance, labour and energy play an important part in deciding where industry is located.
- Case studies of traditional and hi-tech industries will help you to consider industry as a system. By studying the physical and human factors affecting their location you will understand the nature of the industries and recent problems and changes within them. One possible example would be the changes that have taken place in north-east England from heavy engineering and coal to inward investment led by the Japanese and more recently the mushrooming of call centres.
- Current news events surrounding pollution and the rise of industry in less economically developed countries give this topic a global feel. You will find out how countries like South Korea are catching up with the UK and other leading nations.
Opportunities exist for role play and decision making exercises to investigate the different values and attitudes of groups involved.
